Keith Alexander: A True Renaissance Man in Alberta Golf

From Amateur Champion to Hall of Fame Inductee

Keith Alexander's journey from a small-town athlete to a celebrated figure in Alberta's golf history is nothing short of remarkable.

Born in Vulcan, Alberta, Keith was the son of a plaster contractor and an all-around high school athlete who dabbled in golf.

It wasn't until the age of 20 that he took the sport seriously, after his father bartered for ten lessons at Martin Allred's indoor golf school in Calgary in 1950.

This decision marked the beginning of an illustrious golfing career.

Under Allred's tutelage, Keith's talent flourished.

In 1960, he dominated the golf scene by winning all major city and provincial events, culminating in a victory at the Canadian Amateur Championship.

His achievements didn't stop there; he secured six Alberta Amateur Championships and represented Canada on 16 international teams.

His exceptional contributions to the sport led to his induction into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame.

Keith's academic pursuits were equally impressive.

On a scholarship at the University of Colorado, he captained the golf team for three years, leading them to their first individual title.

His academic excellence earned him four citations and an election to Phi Beta Kappa, the prestigious scholastic fraternity.

In 1957, now married with a son, Keith joined the Calgary Golf and Country Club, recognizing it as the hub for top players like Doug Silverberg, Bob Wylie, and Joe Ferguson.

The competitive environment there elevated his game, as he recalled, "We really fought for those positions."

Beyond his personal achievements, Keith dedicated himself to the Alberta Golf Association from 1968 to 1982, serving as president in 1977.

His commitment to the sport was deeply rooted in his Christian faith.

He grew up in a devout household that believed in doing things "with all your might," a principle he applied to every aspect of his life.

Although he once considered joining the ministry, Keith chose to balance his passion for golf with family, community service, and a diverse career that spanned printing, publishing, investment banking, and a term as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA).

Retiring in 1992, he continued to play on the Seniors Tour, albeit with "modest success."

Keith's spiritual commitment remained unwavering.

He actively participated in Links Players, an international Christian golfers group, emphasizing that life is "much more than golf."

He believed in the spiritual nature of man, which transcends everyday events and gives life its fuller meaning.

Keith Alexander's multifaceted life serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that dedication, faith, and passion can lead to extraordinary accomplishments both on and off the golf course.
